The 13th Barcelona International Landscape Biennial has concluded its thirteenth edition, reaffirming itself as an essential meeting point for professionals, academics, and students of landscape architecture from around the world. Under the theme “Natural Intelligence?!”, the Biennial positioned itself at the frontier of a new paradigm that embraces natural intelligence not in opposition to artificial intelligence, but as part of a continuum of forms of knowledge that can mutually inform and enrich one another. Over five days of activities at Fira de Barcelona and the Palau de la Música Catalana, the Biennial combined free events, exhibitions, and the international symposium, inviting participants to expand their understanding and to acknowledge intelligence in its many forms. The program featured contributions from James Bridle, writer, artist, and technologist; Thomas Woltz, Senior Principal at Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects; and Divya Shah, researcher at the Bartlett School of Architecture, among others. The Rosa Barba and Ribas Piera Awards honour the memory and legacy of the architects who inspired them The symposium hosted the presentation of the eight finalist projects for the Rosa Barba Casanovas International Landscape Prize, selected from proposals submitted by some of the world’s most renowned landscape studios. Meanwhile, the Manuel Ribas Piera International Landscape Schools Prize brought together ten leading universities, demonstrating the Biennial’s commitment to education and the future of landscape architecture. As the closing event of the Biennial, a symbolic ceremony was held at the COAC headquarters in Barcelona, with the participation of relatives of Rosa Barba Casanovas and Manuel Ribas Piera, as well as members of the juries of both competitions. The occasion also served to formalize an agreement with the Polytechnic University of Catalonia—represented by its rector, Francesc Torres—and with the heirs of Rosa Barba (Ricard Pié Ninot and Marcel Pié Barba) and of Manuel Ribas (Josep, Isabel, Carme, Anna, and Teresa Ribas Seix) to authorize the use of their names in the titles of the two awards. With this gesture, the International Landscape Biennial seeks to grant well-deserved posthumous recognition to the professional careers of these architects.
