Fengming Mountain Park is intended to become a vibrant and joyful new symbol in the Chongqing city-scape demonstrating how landscape can represent a city in new, exciting and meaningful way.Extreme topography creates a functional challenge to both pedestrian and vehicular movement yet the opportunity existed to provide a dynamic landscape allegory for this park as a ' mountain.' The problem was to design a demonstration park and urban public realm that would express a unique identity for a forthcoming future development. One of the greatest tools in the landscape architects toolbox is to create identity through design. Employing this tool, a vision emerged to form a strong visual connection between the mountainous peaks that frame the site; the agrarian patterning of rice paddy terraces; the Chang Jiang River and the mysterious whitish grey, misty sky of Chongqing. These elements provided an inspiration for the abstracted mountain pavilions, zigzag patterns, molded terrain and use of vivid colors to contrast against the sky. The presence of water is another important part of the scheme expressed as a 'flow' from the arrival plaza at the top to the sales center below: comprised of a variety of different liquid effects such as; channels, pools and jets to assist with cooling, provide sounds and atmosphere that captivates the visitor and leads them through the various plaza levels up or down the sloping terrain.
