Wild Kitchen garden – Community garden as a tale of Sicilian cuisine - 9a Biennal 2016

Emerging from a fenced-off dump site behind the massive cultural centre Castello Chiaramonte, the garden was commissioned by a local arts curator and realized at low cost with the help of volunteers. Its informal appearance and its details of wilderness were beautiful, what they have to do with a kitchen? Was it more than yet another piece of urban agriculture? The designers took inspiration from what the surrounding landscape offered (agricultural fields with interstices of wilderness) as well as less tangible aspects such as atmosphere and local culinary traditions. A conscious choice had been made in favour of an unconventional form of beauty. This garden was not drawn on a distant office computer but imagined on site with people who added their stories to an oeuvre which they themselves also realized, including for example Pino Cuttaia, one of the rising stars of Sicilian cuisine. A deliberate decision to understand creativity as an act of cross-disciplinary storytelling and collaborative crafting. The jury appreciates this garden as an example of Giardini in Campo’s endeavour to prompt garden creation as an educational service to communities that engage hands-on in ‘making’ society and beauty.
