Ribeira das Naus is a mythical site in the national and local identity. Partially produced by the collective imaginary, partially by the official culture. The myth is linked to the naval plant that operated on this site, and that, throughout centuries, produced various types of boats.
As a public space, Ribeira das Naus was itself, until very recently, turned into two distinct zones by a fast circulation road with four lanes that contributed to the destruction of the entire potential of this noble city area.
From a functional prespective, Ribeira das Naus acts as a complementary area towards Praça do Comércio e Cais do Sodré, while a transition platform between points of daily departure and arrival of large flow/numbers of people to the centre of Lisbon city.
The design proposes to work and regenerate the memory of the site from the elements that are still there, some fully buried (the “caldeirinha”), others partially discovered (the dry dock), giving them a proper nowadays reading.
With the regeneration of Ribeira das Naus, Lisbon city was endowed by a public space that reflects the culture and History of the city and allows the use of this public space while a support platform of circulations, observation, leisure, infra-structure, offering the city a new riverfront promenade.
