Ask any native of Belgrade, and they will expand on the ethos of resilience, of rising from the rubble of countless wars. The Belgrade Waterfront represents a new era for the city of fortitude, a celebration of the Sava River and aspirations for a better city by design. Yesterday, neglected warehouses and railyards blocked direct access to the water. Today at the Sava Promenada, residents can delight in the peaceful flow of the river while they enjoy food, music, and culture.
The park features diverse programs: one can take a bike ride, have lunch at a food truck, watch a choir from a riverside amphitheater, and participate in many other programs throughout the year. Material applications bring the history of Belgrade and familiarity to the park, while other features incorporate innovative technologies. Railroad tracks serve as tree grates in one part, while interactive screens greet the visitor and free wi-fi is provided via solar power. Like the city’s ethos of resilience, the Belgrade Waterfront is adaptive to climate change. When the Sava floods during superstorms, the locally sourced, water resilient materials help keep the park in place.
The Belgrade Waterfront project is an innovative model for riverfront development, one in which the history of the city told in the texture and tactile design elements. The goal is to create an environment that pays tribute to Belgrade’s industrial past, while also engendering great aspirations for the city’s future.
