A school playground that demonstrates Best Practice in the debate about what makes good playful curated urban realm.
The project commenced with an artist led experimental playground for one week where the infant and junior playground was transformed into a large experimental space. We tried out ideas and observed and reacted to how children used the space and props.
Following on from the success of the experimental workshops, we wanted to retain a flexible environment for play. We also did not divide the playground up but worked with the space’s existing qualities. Dark spaces were lit, vistas were opened up and bumps in the ground made into hills. Using the very edges that already existed, a new playfulness started to emerge.
The project also captures the domesticity of a back garden when children can drag sheets and cushions out of the house to make dens. The furnishing of the outdoor room is therefore completed by the children and teachers giving the possibility for endless variation.
“….what was happening in the playground. Instead of the usual screams and foul language, there was an excited burble.”
