The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) launched the National Research Program NRP 65 in 2010. The Food Urbanism Initiative (FUI), one of the 5 selected teams, examines the complex relationship between food and the city by assessing the overall impact of urban agriculture on urban design and studying the potential of new landscape and architectural strategies for the integration of food production, processing, distribution and consumption in the city.
The study examines the existing fabric of the Lausanne (including neighborhood structure and organization, buildings, rooftops, public squares, parks, gardens, vacant lots, marginally used parcels, peri-urban fringes and post-industrial areas) in terms of its potential for incorporating urban agricultural initiatives. It also develops design strategies and policies for future urban development that integrate both city life and food production cycles into a more harmonious coexistence, socially, economically, and environmentally responsible. A key product of this collaboration is Food Urbanism Toolkit, a tested and openly accessible information box offering codified and well-described typologies, urban strategies and evaluation criteria created to further test and better integrate urban food production within the administrative, planning, design and agricultural communities as well as among the general public.
