One Central Park - 9a Biennal 2016

Sacha Coles, Roger Jasprizza, Keith Stead

One Central Park is a landmark mixed use project forming a significant gateway to downtown Sydney. The project comprises two residential towers and retail podium addressing the site’s frontages with a built form veiled by a combination of green facades designed by ASPECT | OCULUS and green walls designed by Patrick Blanc.

ASPECT | OCULUS’ scope extended to the design of the residential lobby, ground floor planting, podium courtyard gardens, lower ground courtyard and retail atrium planting. One Central Park is the largest green facade project in Australia, and despite microclimatic challenges, the planting is thriving, contributing significantly to the backdrop of public open spaces.

The successful lower ground public courtyard at the retail interface demonstrates the importance of high quality public open spaces. Trees provide shade, steps are used as seating, whilst terraced gardens and the changing appearance of the diverse plant species provide an invaluable connection with nature and seasonal change in a dense urban setting.

The project sets an innovative exemplar for high density city living that has been embraced by its immediate community and the city at large. One Central Park has become a renowned icon for ‘living architecture’, sustainability, and vibrant urban life, significantly contributing to the liveability of the city.
