The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is a city campus known for its brutalist architecture. The UTS Alumni Green offered a unique opportunity to counter the built form by introducing a civic, humane social centrepiece within a landscape setting for the university.
The UTS Alumni Green is a vital piece of green infrastructure in an otherwise highly urbanised part of the CBD, offering a series of three distinct landscape experiences: The Green – a large sun-filled open turf platform for both special events and informal daily activities; The Heart – a paved amphitheatre and ceremonial gathering space for students and visitors; and The Garden – a series of abundantly planted pods containing facilities ranging from power outlets for laptops, BBQ facilities and even ping pong tables.
As an unfenced project, the peaceful and functional surrounds draw in not only students and staff of the university but also the wider community. By prioritising the design of places for people to work and socialise, the UTS Alumni Green has become the green social heart of the campus: a place where people want to work, stay, be and play, creating a ‘sticky campus’. The UTS Alumni Green has been transformed into a vibrant, tree-lined city space at the heart of the university, creating new opportunities for social connection.
