Recreio Ecological Corridor is an initiative of Rio de Janeiro’s municipal government, in order to connect protected parks in Recreio dos Bandeirantes neighborhood, promoting an integrated coexistence among people and local fauna and flora. This region in Brazilian coastline is composed of remaining ecosystems from the Atlantic biome which have been suffering increasingly with urban sprawl. The Taxas River and other places with ecological potencial will be the means of improving connection and gene flow among the protected parks.
The project was grounded on the concepts of ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION, GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE and URBAN ECOLOGY. They were unfolded in three main design guidelines: PROTECT, CONNECT and EXPAND, which were translated in many interventions.
Sandra Alvim Walkway is one of the main intervention areas and a great opportunity to enhance ecological performance, recover cultural heritage embedded in landscape, and also promote environmental education. The project comprises the creation of sand dunes and the enrichment of vegetation with native plants, including the ones that were used by indigenous people with agricultural and medicinal purpose. It incorporates totems designed for birds and other pollinator species in order to contribute to biodiversity. Furthermore, aerial structures are proposed in crossroads to soften barriers that roads represent to the Ecological Corridor’s connectivity and gene flow.
