Peris+Toral Arquitectes are set to transform the public areas at the COAC headquarters

The competition to transform the public areas of the Plaça Nova headquarters into the Open Architecture Centre of Barcelona, convened last May, now has a winner: the AGORA project by Peris+Toral Arquitectes, namely Marta Peris and José Manuel Toral.
The winning project proposes opening up the public areas of the COAC, taking advantage of the transparency of the ground floor and enhancing the visibility of the interior, where an urban-scale grandstand invites passers-by to come in, turning the lobby into a kind of agora that flows out to the Plaça Nova. This agora will enhance the visibility of the mezzanine, inviting visitors to start their tour by going up to the communal areas of the COAC. Until now this walk ended in the auditorium, but with the new project it will extend to the second floor of the building, taking advantage of the so-called ‘terrace of friezes’, which will be used for open-air cultural events.
The Jury’s decision
The key features that the Jury highlighted in this proposal were "its transversal street-to-street nature, the transparency of the relationship with Plaça Nova and the amount of light brought into the darkest section, where the auditorium is located". They also highlighted aspects such as the "versatility of the spaces created", "the creation of more than one ambience" and "the accessibility solutions provided". And all without relinquishing the architectural language of the original building.
Open Architecture Centre of Barcelona
Following the recent renovation of the building’s facade, and taking advantage of its privileged location, the COAC is taking another step forward with the aim of strengthening its connection with the general public, making the venue more versatile and accessible. The goal is to become a meeting place between the general public and architects, a common space for debate and reflection that aims to raise awareness of the role of architecture as well as promoting research.
The refurbishment work of the different spaces is expected to take place throughout 2020. During the interventions, the COAC's cultural activities will be rescheduled in alternative venues around the city.

Apart from the winning project, the +PLUS proposal by Jorge Vidal was awarded a special mention. The other proposals that went through to the second stage were as follows:

La arquitecta Maria Almirall, premiada en los Architecture MasterPrize por el proyecto Espai CEL

La arquitecta catalana Maria Almirall, del estudio ARQUETIPUS, ha sido reconocida por su proyecto Espai CEL en los Architecture MasterPrize 2019, otorgados el pasado 14 de octubre en el Museo Guggenheim de Bilbao. La obra, ubicada en Caldes de Montbui, es una de las ganadoras en la categoría de "Restauración y Renovación".
Espai CEL
Con el objetivo de crear un nuevo espacio lúdico de agua termal en el edificio preexistente del Balneario Termes Victòria, el proyecto se adentra en los recintos creados hace 250 años, usados históricamente para la reserva del agua termal original y del agua termal fría para el uso de las personas. Así, en los espacios de los antiguos depósitos, ocultos hasta el momento, y también en la galería de baños tradicionales, se han situado las diferentes piscinas, cada una con características específicas.
La arquitecta ha optado por conservar la huella de las distintas épocas históricas que ha vivido el espacio: el original depósito de piedra, la fase de los muros revestidos con la conservación de la marca del agua, y la época actual en la cual se aplican y se pueden leer con claridad elementos y materiales más modernos.
El proyecto de ARQUETIPUS ha sido galardonado con distintos reconocimientos, siendo finalista en los Hotel & Property Awards 2019, en los Premios Piscina & Wellness Barcelona 2019 y en los Premios Arquitectura Plus 2019, que se entregarán el próximo 27 de noviembre.

L'arquitecta Maria Almirall, premiada als Architecture MasterPrize pel projecte Espai CEL

L'arquitecta catalana Maria Almirall, de l'estudi ARQUETIPUS – projectes arquitectònics, ha estat reconeguda pel seu projecte Espai CEL als Architecture Masterprize 2019, atorgats el passat 14 d'octubre al Museu Guggenheim de Bilbao. L'obra, ubicada a Caldes de Montbui, és una de les guanyadores en la categoria de "Restauració i Renovació".

L'estudi b720 Fermín Vázquez, doblement premiat als Architecture MasterPrize

L'estudi b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos, amb seu a Barcelona, ha estat reconegut amb dos premis als Architecture MasterPrize pels seus edificis Torre Forma Itaim i Lycée Français Maternelle.
El primer projecte, ubicat a São Paulo (Brasil), ha estat seleccionat com un dels guanyadors a la categoria ‘Edificis en altura’, mentre que el segon, a Barcelona, es troba entre els guanyadors a la categoria ‘Edificis educatius’.
Torre Forma Itaim
L'edifici busca maximitzar l'esbeltesa del volum i obtenir les dues direccions principals de visió des de cada apartament, alhora que es disposa d'espais socials en una planta intermitja diferenciada, que divideix la torre en dues parts. Les façanes es resolen amb una doble pell de peces ceràmiques esmaltades, obtenint una àmplia gama de colors que aconsegueixen atorgar a l'edifici una presència singular.
Lycée Français Maternelle
El projecte consisteix en la creació d'un nou edifici, eficient, funcional i representatiu, mantenint una de les viles preexistents, de principis del segle XX.. El nou conjunt proposa un diàleg entre el col·legi històric i el del futur. La resolució formal del nou edifici evoca les formes de la vila original a través de la volumetria i la composició, incorporant a més un joc cromàtic.
Architecture MasterPrize
Els premis Architecture MasterPrize (AMP), creats per Farmani Group, volen reconèixer la creativitat i la innovació en els camps de l'arquitectura, el paisatgisme i el disseny d'interiors, amb l'objectiu de promoure l'apreciació de la qualitat arquitectònica a nivell internacional. La ceremònia de lliurament de premis tindrà lloc el proper 14 d'octubre al Museu Guggenheim de Bilbao.
