Lluís Domènech i Montaner (1849-1923) constitutes in himself and in his work as a whole one of the most paradigmatic examples of the cultured, progressive and creative spirit of the turn of the century. His personality is projected with proven transversal success in several areas: culture, politics, teaching and above all architecture: the true epicenter of his public life.
Domènech creates around a new structural model – form, function and symbol – an innovative ornamental repertoire that allows the incorporation of the best artists and artisans. The result presented through his architectural projects shows one of the most conceptually rational and decoratively richest architectures in history and makes him one of the most outstanding figures of Modernism. His architectural production ranges from urban projects to large monumental ensembles and small-scale commissions. The work in his studio is carried out with the collaboration of a consolidated group of technicians, artisans and industrialists, who act as the guiding thread of his work in search of the total work of art.
Despite this architectural and intellectual work of a very high level, after his death in 1923 during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera (1923-1925), his influence faded. It is not until the 60s when a group of architects began to claim the singularities of his architecture, at the same time as the modernist movement in general was highlighted .
2023 marks the 100th anniversary of his death. This sessions do not want to cover Domènech i Montaner’s vast architectural and intellectual production, but rather to concentrate and deepen the architectural side of his work within the multiplicity of acts planned during the commemorative year.
We want to analyze Domènech’s work as a paradigm and key figure of Catalan Modernism, highlighting the connections and complicity with his contemporary European cultural movements. The interventions in the works of Domènech i Montaner will be compared/complemented with the interventions in the architectural heritage of some of his European homologues.
The proposed objectives are:
-Disseminate and promote the architectural Domènech’s i Montaner projects.
-Analyze the various types of interventions on his works over time.
-Study the various cases that condition the interventions: changes of use, regulatory adaptations, state of conservation, sustainability criteria, etc...
-Debating the problems of architectural intervention in buildings of this chronology, studying the various strategies that are carried out at an international level.
