Architects—a key element in making the 2030 Agenda a reality in Catalonia and Spain

Since 2016, the 2030 Agenda has served as the United Nations' road map in seeking to move forward towards a global model of sustainable development by 2030. This framework of action is structured into 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which include targets and indicators to evaluate the achievement of the proposed objectives.
Architects play a key role in orchestrating the SDGs, as many of the issues being tackled have a direct link with their field, such as health, inequalities, inclusion, economic prosperity, housing and the fight against climate change.
The COAC is a participant in the Assembly of the Catalan Urban Agenda
In order to uphold the role of architecture in the urban transformation process, the dean of the Architects’ Association of Catalonia, Assumpció Puig, will represent architects at the constituent session of the Urban Assembly of Catalonia, which takes place on 5 November at the Palau de la Generalitat and will be chaired by the president of the Government of Catalonia, Quim Torra.
The Association’s involvement reaffirms its commitment to inclusive, sustainable and prosperous urban development, as well as expressing the need to promote the implementation of the Catalan Agreement on Urban Renewal, a countrywide project linked to the Catalan Urban Agenda and aimed at improving people’s quality of life, turning around the current situation of building stock, and revitalizing the sector’s economy. Further information.
The Architecture Observatory, a working tool to affirm the leading position of architects
The Higher Council of Architects’ Associations of Spain (CSCAE) has set up an Architecture Observatory, a working tool to affirm the leading position of architects, which will issue publications and monographs to support the challenges set by the SDGs.
The new Observatory, which enjoys the support of four ministries, the High Commissioner for the 2030 Agenda and UN-Habitat, will consist of a multidisciplinary committee made up of representatives from the government, industry, the third sector, foundations, associations, technology institutes and universities, who in turn represent all the agents involved in construction and urban development processes. Further information.

For the third year running, the Architects’ Association —in conjunction with Barcelona City Council, the Mies van der Rohe Foundation, Barcelona Building Construmat and ArquinFAD– are organizing Architecture Week, which takes place between 9 and 19 May 2019.
With this new edition, and with the collaboration of the Barcelona Education Consortium, we will be bringing architecture to the city’s primary and secondary schools. We will be holding a series of workshops and talks, given by architects during school hours, so the students can observe, consider and follow the thread of the architecture in their immediate surroundings.
The idea is to give children a fresh perspective of the spaces that surround us, inspire us, foster relationships and generate dynamics of inclusion, looking at them as an expression of the civilization and culture of our times.
Would you like to get involved?
If you’re an architect or architectural student, you can take part by giving one of the workshops or talks. You have time to present your proposal until 15 January by completing the following form.
Planned themes
The activity will be based on three main concepts–body, habitat and territory–which will be explored transversally through a choice of themes:
· Modern architecture, with a focus on built architectural features close to the school, to explore the historical legacy of our city in greater depth while also evaluating it.
· Architecture today, focusing on projects to renovate and improve existing buildings, with an emphasis on energy efficiency and public health.
· Public spaces, in collaboration with neighbourhood associations, with a focus on spaces that citizens have won back thanks to neighbourhood campaigns.
· Inclusive cities: cities for everyone, given by third sector organizations, with an emphasis on universal design and how architecture can help to break down barriers and enable people to live independently.
· Local architecture, visiting architectural practices close to the schools.
Do you work for a primary or secondary school that may be interested?
Schools in Barcelona city can start sending their applications to the Barcelona Education Consortium to sign up for Architecture Week 2019. To do so, simply complete this application form.
