Library and Historical Archive

One of the main objectives of the Association is to provide its members with the necessary tools to get all the information they need to practice their profession with a broad perspective, encompassing a vision of the contemporary world enhanced by the historical documentation that connects us with the past.

The documentation facilities of the Architects’ Association of Catalonia, comprising its Library and Historic Archive, house a significant collection of documents, which makes them a major point of reference for information on Catalan architectural heritage.

The Library, with five reading rooms in each of the Association’s regional branches (Barcelona, Girona, Tarragona, Lleida and Ebre) is today the second largest architecture library in Europe in terms of the number of volumes, with more than 180,000 references which include works dating as far back as the 16th century.

The Historic Archive contains around 1,850,000 documents from more than one hundred professional archives. These are original documents of all kinds —from plans to photographs, reports, drawings, etc—mainly resulting from donations, which make the Archive one of the most important document repositories of its kind in Europe.

Uno de los objetivos principales del COAC es dotar a los arquitectos de las herramientas necesarias para que puedan disponer de la información que necesitan para llevar a cabo su actividad profesional con una perspectiva amplia, tanto con una visión del mundo contemporáneo actualizada, como con una documentación histórica que ligue con el pasado.

Así, los equipamientos documentales del Colegio de Arquitectos de Catalunya, integrados por la Biblioteca y el Archivo Histórico, custodian un importante fondo documental que los convierten en una referencia para el conocimiento del patrimonio arquitectónico catalán.

La Biblioteca, con cinco salas de consulta distribuidas en las demarcaciones colegiales (Barcelona, Girona, Tarragona, Lleida y Tarragona), es hoy la segunda de Europa en número de volúmenes; más de 180.000 referencias, incluyendo obras a partir del siglo XVI.

Por otro lado, el Archivo Histórico incluye cerca de 1.850.000 piezas documentales de más de un centenar de archivos profesionales. Se trata de documentos originales de todo tipo -desde planos hasta fotografías, memorias, dibujos, etc.- fruto, sobre todo, de donaciones, que lo convierten en uno de los centros de documentación más importantes de Europa.
