COAC BARCELONA PROMOTES THE '10 ARCHITECTURE FESTIVALS'
The Architects’ Association of Catalonia is promoting the 10 Architecture Festivals 2023, an evolution of Architecture Week that will take place at different venues in Barcelona from 25 March to 10 June. Architecture Week thus goes from 10 days to 10 weeks, with an eye on the future: Barcelona World Capital of Architecture 2026. That will be the moment when we move from 10 weeks to 10 months of architecture throughout the territory.
The Architecture Festivals, which the Barcelona branch organises year after year in different areas of the city, aim to highlight a specific space or building in each district: identifying it, pointing out the challenges lying ahead for it architecturally and giving impetus among both citizens and institutions to move things forward. Guided tours, talks, concerts and different types of workshops, among other events, are organised around these public spaces and buildings.
For 10 weeks, Barcelona will become the epicentre of a wide range of activities related to the world of architecture, urban planning, design and the city, moving beyond disciplinary boundaries, highlighting the social role of architects and the architecture of the territory, raising awareness of the value of heritage and encouraging discovery of the environment.
10 festivals, 10 districts, 10 World Days
This year, the emphasis is on World Days, which will serve as the common thread of the ten Architecture Festivals held in each of the city’s ten districts. The agenda includes:
- 25 March from 11 am to 2 pm. Architecture Festival: Valuing the architecture of water. World Water Day. Horta-Guinardó.
- 1 April from 11 am to 2 pm. Architecture Festival: Renaturalising the surroundings of Can Valent. World Building Rehabilitation Day. Nou Barris.
- 8 April from 11 am to 2 pm. Architecture Festival: Reviving the anti-tuberculosis dispensary. World Health Day. Ciutat Vella.
- 15 April from 11 am to 2 pm. Architecture Festival: Caring for heritage. International Day for Monuments and Sites. Sant Andreu.
- 22 April from 11 am to 2 pm. Architecture Festival: Building the inclusive city. World Creativity and Innovation Day. Les Corts.
- 30 April from 11 am to 14 pm. Architecture Festival: Touring industrial heritage. International Dance Day. Sant Martí.
- 6 May from 6 pm to 10 pm. Architecture Festival: Respecting silence. International Noise Awareness Day. Gràcia.
- 13 May from 11 am to 2 pm. Architecture Festival: Recovering Passeig de la Zona Franca. World Day of Local Commerce. Sants-Montjuïc.
- 20 May from 11 am to 2 pm. Architecture Festival: Opening the doors. International Horticulture Day. Sarrià-Sant Gervasi.
- 10 June from 11 am to 2 pm. Architecture Festival: Discovering the Escola Industrial site. International Ceramics Day. Eixample.
8 MARCH: WE ARE WOMEN AND WE ARE ARCHITECTS!
To mark International Women’s Day on 8 March, the COAC is promoting the campaign “We are women and we are architects!”, put together by the Open Group of Women Architects and the COAC’s Barcelona office. The initiative aims to showcase our country’s female talent by publicising works bearing the names of women.
The COAC wants its social media accounts to serve as a window on the work of women architects and to highlight the particularities and characteristics of the female gaze in the profession. That is why during the month of March we will be showcasing the women architects who have participated in the campaign with an exhibition featuring around a 100 works under the hashtag #socArquitectA.New buildings, renovations, urban planning and design projects and theoretical studies related to architecture will be presented in an initiative that will also showcase the diversity of professional profiles.
Still a way to go
Architecture has traditionally been a male-dominated profession. Currently, only 33% of Association members are women, but the numbers are on the rise. In fact, for years now, more women architects than men have been graduating from architecture schools, and 47% of new members are women.
Even so, there is still a long way to go. Fewer women than men lead architectural firms: of the nearly 2,000 architects who have their own offices, only 482 are women, less than a quarter (24.9%) of the total. Men triple this percentage to 75.1% (1,457).
Women are also the group to feel the effects of a crisis more quickly, as can be seen in the number of women withdrawing their Association membership. In the context of the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this dynamic could already be felt in 2020: 2.6% of the women left the COC, almost one point above the 1.7% of men who did so.
The COAC, committed to gender equality
The COAC has long shown its commitment to gender equality. The institution’s Governing Board is parity-based and there is also an Equality Plan, as well as a guide for the use of non-sexist language. The COAC also gives visibility to women architects by organising events and activities through the Open Group of Women Architects, made up of more than 180 female architects working in different areas of the profession.
Construmat celebra una nova edició amb la participació de 180 empreses del sector
Del 23 al 25 de maig la Fira de Barcelona celebrarà la 22a edició del Saló de la Construcció al Recinte de Gran Via.
Els arquitectes col·legiats podeu obtenir una acreditació gratuïta mitjançant el codi que trobareu al Plus COAC.
Més de 180 empreses expositores i prop de 300 marques participaran en l'esdeveniment. Amb la superfície expositiva completa, el saló ampliarà el seu espai a l'exterior del pavelló, on s'ubicarà l'exposició de maquinària industrial i eines per a la construcció.
Entre les companyies que hi participaran estan: Alsina, Alu Factory, Arquima, Breinco, Celo, Cementos Molins, Cosentino, Durmi, Egoin, Evowall, Fischer, Gabarró, Hercal, Jung, Kiloutou, Layher, O Feliz Painel, PMP, Grupo Protec, Roca, Rehatec, Roi, Grupo Saltoki, Sebastià, Simpson Strong Tie, Tejas Borja, Thermis, Volcalis, entre d'altres.
Congrés i activitats paral·leles
A banda de l'espai expositiu, el saló també comptarà amb un congrés de tres dies on es debatran alguns dels principals reptes del sector de la construcció en matèria de sostenibilitat, industrialització i digitalització.
El degà del COAC, Guillem Costa Calsamiglia, participarà en la sesió "Rehabilitació energètica amb fons Next Generation", que tindrà lloc el dimarts dia 23 a les 15.30 h.
A més, en el marc de l'Aula de Formació, es realitzaran jornades tècniques, tallers i demostracions sobre les últimes novetats en productes i serveis adreçats als professionals.

Visita guiada a l'exposició "Línies Dures" amb el seu comissari, Valentín Roma
La mostra, organitzada conjuntament pel COAC, el Centre Obert d'Arquitectura i La Virreina, reuneix 29 obres ordenades cronològicament i reconstruïdes mitjançant documents, textos i imatges que, en la seva majoria, s’ensenyen per primera vegada dins d’un context expositiu. L'exposició es podrà visitar a l'antiga seu de l'Editorial Gustavo Gili fins al 2 de juliol.
